Gamer (2009)

★★½☆☆☆☆

I seldom go to the cinema on pure impulse. But this Tuesday was an exception. I went to see Gamer. And when I returned to the streets I wished I’d rather downloaded it by torrents.

The Shoot ‘Em Up-phenomenon

It’s not that it’s such a terrible movie. It’s just something you should rather see hung over on a Sunday on a poor HD-ready TV than at the cinema. (The so called Shoot ‘Em Up-phenomenon.)

One of the highlights of the movie was a fat naked guy in a wheelchair drewling. And that says a lot.

Set in a near future. New nanotechnology has made it possible for humans to control other humans in massive online-games. The biggest of them all is the game ‘Slayers’ where convicts sentenced to death are able to regain their independence by surviving 30 matches in a war zone while being controlled by nerdy fourteen year old boys. Our guy (Kable played by Gerard Butler) is off course on the death row for a crime he didn’t commit, and is near by winning his freedom by beating the game. And, wait for it, he has off course undone business with the creator of the game, played by Michael C. Hall, as well.

What about a sober cameraman?

It’s a well known formula and it opens for a great deal of action. And the explosions are really cool. But that’s about it.

I’m not demanding that every movie has a completely new revolutionizing storyline. But I do prefer a sober cameraman on set. This movie was filmed by a drunken man with killer bees under his shirt and edited by a crack baby riding a rodeo bull with a gun put to its neck.

I seriously got a headache out of watching this. Maybe it’s not such a great hangover-movie after all.
